Which webcams offer the best quality video?

We found 20 IT specialists and asked them the question, “what makes the best webcams great to use?”. Easy to use, good video quality and compatibility with the major operating systems were the most common responses.

Armed with the knowledge, we went ahead and tested 60 different models over the course of 72 hours. We found the Logitech C920HD 1080p Camera to be the best. It had excellent video quality, is compatible with both Windows and Mac and is well designed.

The Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 Webcam, while only being compatible with Windows is very compact and is the smallest webcam on our list. Read on to discover more!

Logitech C920 HD Pro USB 1080p Webcam – Black – 98%

Similar to the Papalook 1080p PA452 Camera, the Logitech also comes with 1080p capacity. We liked the resulting image quality. We also found that we could use the webcam to capture good quality videos which we particularly enjoyed.

This camera comes with an integrated H.264 compression. This, as we came to learn provided fluidity to the images and made it simple to upload videos. The overall picture quality was very good. It is also well made and was pleasing to look at with a high-tech design.

However, we didn’t like the quality of the microphone. Unlike with the Papalook 1080p PA452 Camera, this camera didn’t provide us with the best quality sound. The sound wasn’t very clear when we connected to Skype

  • Looks durable.
  • Easy to connect to the computer.
  • Sound quality was not the best.

We liked the clip support for the Aukey. It held on very securely when placed on the monitor which means that we didn’t have to worry much about tipping it over and making it fall.

We noticed that the webcam features two microphones and went straight to testing how well it performed. The video quality and sound was very good.

Another feature was the fact that we could connect the webcam on Windows, Mac as well as Android OS. It also worked on the smart TV and android box and once clipped onto the screen it added to the aesthetics with its sleek design.

On the other hand, we found that the image quality dropped significantly when there was too much light in the room. For the best experience we found medium lighting to be just right.

  • Clips hold the camera securely.
  • Beautiful design.
  • High video quality.
  • Picture quality was affected by a lot of light

The AUSDOM comes with the thick and durable exterior. We liked that it looked like it could withstand a fall. We used the webcam for the normal video call which was high quality and also found that we could record videos as well. Unlike the iRush GUCEE HD92 Webcam, the AUSDOM doesn’t hum when recording videos.

We particularly enjoyed the fact that we could connect on both Windows and Mac OS as well as Chrome OSTM making it a versatile and reliable camera. This was very much unlike the Papalook 1080p PA452 Camera which we found could only run on Windows.

However, we didn’t like the sound quality. We also found that it didn’t include a software and for that, we needed to access their website and download it which was quite inconvenient.

  • Simple to use.
  • Good quality video.
  • Sound quality was not the best.
  • Doesn’t come with a software.

Another good feature that we discovered was the cinematic video recording at 16:9. We found that we could use this camera on Windows Live Messenger, AOL instant Messenger, Skype as well as Yahoo. Connecting to the computer was quick and easy.

The main drawback with the Microsoft LifeCam is the audio. It was not very clear as we found with some of the other models. We also didn’t like the fact that it features a fixed focus which meant we had to spend a bit of time to achieve the right position.

We also enjoyed the fact that the webcam connected easily on LINUX. We could stream on twitch even while the quality of the stream wasn’t the best.

The downside to this camera is that it comes with a fixed focus. Getting the right distance for the best quality images was not the simplest task especially when the light in the room faded. We also had a bit of a challenge changing to 720p on the Logitech software.

  • Simple to connect to the computer.
  • Looks good.
  • Streams easily.
  • Changing to 720p on the software wasn’t very easy.

We found out that the camera has a frame rate of 25FPS which we attributed to the good images. Connecting to the computer was also a very simple process.

Another features that caught our attention is the noise cancelling microphone. It took out any noise in the background which resulted in clear and crisp sounds and we found that we didn’t need to use a dedicated headset.

Similar to the papalook 1080p PA452 Camera, we liked the noise cancelling USB microphone. The sound quality was good as a result of this feature and there was really no need for using a dedicated headset.

However, we wanted to find out how it performed when streaming. We didn’t like the quality of the stream as it was far from the quality of video that we had when communication through Skype.

We also didn’t like how the image quality dropped significantly when the light went down.

  • Looks durable.

The image quality of the Auto Focus Webcam was very good. This is due to the 2.0-megapixel sensor. There was fluidity to the videos and communication was easy with very little interruptions.

We also enjoyed the large field of view that the camera provided. We could see more of the background as opposed to just seeing the face of the person on the other end.

This webcam also features a noise reduction microphone. However unlike with the TeckNet 1080p Webcam which has a USB microphone, the Auto Focus Webcam was inbuilt. It resulted in clear and crisp sounds.

On the downside we found that installing the software was not the simplest task and it did take quite some time. Another thing that we found quite annoying is the humming sound that the webcam produced during recording video.
